Position Summary

The Technical Operation Specialist is responsible for assay troubleshooting, evaluation and improvement. Responsibilities include developing and implementing method modifications under the supervision and technical guidance and instructions of scientific and medical directors. The incumbent actively supports and complies with all company and departmental policies and procedures.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Under supervision: develops, plans, and executes proactive approaches to optimize and modify existing tests and improve assay efficiencies.

  2. Responsible for the evaluation, validation, and implementation of new laboratory instruments and methodologies.

  3. Responsible for evaluation, validation, and implementation of cost saving initiatives and process improvements.

  4. Ensure appropriate documentation is in place to comply with guidelines of inspection agencies, manufacturers and department recommendations.

  5. Maintain a high level of competency and expertise in the area of instrumentation (i.e. reading related articles, attending workshops, in-house lectures, off-site training and seminars).

  6. Provides technical and educational support to lab staff for laboratory protocols and procedures.

  7. Coordinates and initiates repairs, and preventative maintenance of instruments in partnership with Operations and R&D.

  8. Adheres to all established laboratory safety requirements.  Required to use (a) personal protective equipment, including latex gloves (b) engineering controls and/or (c) work practice controls as directed by management.

  9. Actively supports and complies with laboratory policies and procedures.

  10. Maintain compliance with all regulatory agency requirements through documentation, audits, and corrective action.

  11. Performs other job-related/miscellaneous duties as assigned by Operations and/or Scientific Management.

Many duties are performed while standing or sitting in a laboratory and may require manual dexterity and visual acuity in the operation of equipment.  Some operations include the use of chemicals that requires following safe handling procedures. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls and reach with hands and arms; in the operation of equipment or instruments located in the work environment.  The employee is frequently required to sit and occasionally required to stand, walk, and stoop.  The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close and distance vision, ability to distinguish color, and depth perception. The employee will be required to handle biological samples and potentially hazardous materials.



Qualifications



Experience, Education, and Licensure

Qualifications for this position pertain to full-time employees. The following requirements for academic/experience criteria must be fulfilled.

Bachelor of Science (BS) or above (preferably in life science, engineering, or computer science information) from an accredited college or university with at least 5 years of work experience in clinical laboratory.

Prior hands-on experience with applicable departmental instrumentations and software is preferable.



Knowledge, Skills and Abilities                                                                                   

Thorough knowledge of technical aspects of all tests performed and equipment utilized in the discipline for which he/she is responsible.

Ability to perform typical analytical laboratory tasks (sample handling, extraction, reagent preparation, etc.).

Able to exercise critical thinking and independent judgment in stressful environments.

Able to work independently or under minimal supervision to design and conduct experiments, as well as interpret, document, and communicate results.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.  Strong computer skills (i.e. word processing skills using Windows based software such as Word, Excel, Powerpoint).

Is highly self-motivated and eager to learn new skills and technologies. 

Willing to work in a dynamic, fast-paced environment, and be capable of handling multiple tasks while meeting timelines.

Thorough knowledge and demonstrated support of the company’s policies, procedures, and goals.

Demonstrated ability to adapt to protocols to meet product requirements and optimal specification.
