Job Description

Schedule:  Monday - Friday  8a-4p, some shift adjustment may be required periodically 

JOB SUMMARY:  The Technical
Specialist has the overall responsibility for the planning, coordination, and
evaluation of all technical and/or operational activities in Specimen
Processing.  Responsible for performing duties so as to operate the lab
with the highest quality safety and integrity, and in an efficient, economical
and businesslike manner are of utmost importance.


1. Documents all competency testing
assuring completeness and timeliness, and ensures that the appropriate
corrective actions are developed and implemented, as needed. 

2. Tracks the department monthly
metrics.  Reviews metrics with Specimen Service Supervisor and helps
design and implement processes to demonstrate continued improvement. 

3. Maintain the laboratory client
database, ensuring accurate data entry and a reduction in account
proliferation.  Assures timely updates to database as needed.

4. Assists Supervisors in
preparedness for In-house, corporate, and accrediting agency inspections.

5. Observes performance of technical
SOPs covering each work station once annually.  Dissociations from the
written procedure are documented and quality improvement actions are determined
in conjunction with the department manager and supervisor.  Follow-up
observations are made to assure improvements are in place.

6. Tracks requisition data entry
errors, provides metrics on a monthly basis, recommends and implements 
improvements as needed.

 7. Works directly with the
Medical Director, Data Management and electronic reporting personnel to assure
that patient data is properly represented on all report formats for testing
from all sources (in-house, remote laboratory sites and referral laboratories.

8. Performs system tests of data
transmission across within-laboratory electronic interfaces to assure
accuracy.   Works with IT and technical staff to test new interfaces,
and to ensure that any interface issues are resolved in a timely manner.

9. Maintains adequate phlebotomy
supplies, shipping kits and requisitions, orders additional inventory as
needed.  Conducts monthly  inventory counts, enters data  in

10. Reviews equipment maintenance
records on a monthly basis.

11. Participates on the Laboratory
Operations Management’s QA/Compliance team.

    Monitoring laboratory billing charge master and reviewing daily charge reports for accuracy

     oversight of laboratory safety program

    assistance with oversight of point of care testing 

Other:   PC application
skills in Microsoft Office including Excel and Access.
