Responsible for providing an accurate gross description of surgical pathology specimens and for selecting appropriate sections of tissue which when processed will enable the Pathologist to render the appropriate diagnosis. The incumbent shall possess the ability to differentiate between specimens that are routine and within his/her capabilities and those specimens that require a board certified pathologist. The incumbent complies with all company and departmental policies and procedures.


1. Provides an accurate gross description of surgical specimens in accordance with the procedures outlined in the Surgical Pathology Manual; more complex specimens must be referred to the pathologist.

2. Selects the correct number of tissue sections from the appropriate anatomical locations strictly adhering to established requirements as outlined in the Surgical Pathology Manual. Accurately records the number of tissue sections and cassettes submitted on the grossing log. Draws diagrams of submitted tissue sections on the requisition as the situation dictates.

3. Adheres to established departmental turnaround times.

4. Verifies and ensures proper documentation is adhered to.

5. Maintains work area in a neat and clean manner.

6. Places specimens in processors and assists in troubleshooting the tissue processor as the need dictates.

7. Notifies immediate supervisor of any specimen or client problems. Documents appropriately.

8. Adheres to all established laboratory safety requirements.

9. Required to use (a) personal protective equipment, (b) engineering controls and/or (c) work practice controls as directed by management.

10. Performs other ancillary duties as assigned by a competent authority.


-Bachelor's Degree in biology or related science, or equivalent training and experience, with one (1) year of pertinent work experience in anatomic pathology.

-Use of respiratory protection equipment required.

-Sound practical and theoretical knowledge of anatomic pathology principles and procedures.

-Attention to detail. Ability to work without close supervision.

-Familiarization and utilization of laboratory computer software applications.

-Required to handle biological samples and potentially hazardous chemicals.
