Molecular Genetics/NGS Scientist – the role

The Molecular Genetics/NGS Scientist, acting under the leadership of the Scientific and/or Medical Director, will carry out assay development activities under good laboratory practices in a molecular environment, utilizing methods including nucleic acid extraction, isolation, and quantitation techniques, and molecular and genomics based applications (i.e. PCR, RT-qPCR, sanger sequencing, fragment analysis, next generation sequencing), and general troubleshooting experience for molecular-based applications.

The successful candidate will have prior wet bench lab experience with next generation sequencing (i.e. targeted resequencing) and a working understanding of bioinformatics concepts in a next generation sequencing environment.

The candidate will also have good laboratory practices in a molecular environment with experience with different nucleic acid extraction, isolation, and quantitation techniques, experience with different molecular-based applications (i.e. PCR, RT-qPCR, sanger sequencing, fragment analysis), and general troubleshooting experience for molecular-based applications. The candidate should be comfortable working independently and collaboratively with both internal and external stakeholders.

Job responsibilities:

  • Develops, plans, conducts and records results from complex experiments within a specific product or technology area.

  • Performs laboratory experiments following defined protocols and company procedures.

  • Reports status of assigned projects through the preparation of detailed reports and documentation that summarize experiment results. Interprets results of experiments and recommends alternative experiments.

  • Works within established parameters on individual assignments, on project teams for longer-term projects or as a leader for a project team or group. Presents experimental results to supervisor or project team members and contributes ideas to improve team processes.

  • Participates in technical decisions affecting product development issues. Identifies problems, investigates alternatives and recommends possible courses of action. Works with team members and other Business Unit personnel (operations, product transfer, project management, and quality departments) to meet department and project objectives.

  • May prepare and/or contribute to articles for publication. Presents information at project meetings and may present findings at scientific meetings or to customers.

  • May attend technical conferences or seminars. Maintains knowledge of technological developments that may assist in the completion of an assignment or lead to new products, processes or procedures by reading current literature.

  • Responsibilities include supporting and complying with the company's hazardous waste management program, including following safe, hazardous waste handling practices.

  • Effectively utilizes and applies advanced methods or technologies. Contributes ideas for new product development typically within existing markets.

To qualify, the ideal candidate will have the following:

  • Ph.D. in the biological sciences, or equivalent qualifications with experience in genetics/molecular oncology

  • Prior experience as a clinical medical technologist or as a R&D scientist in a clinical molecular diagnostics reference laboratory is preferred

  • Capable of working both independently and in a collaborative environment

  • Analytical thinker who is detail- and technically-oriented with the ability to problem solve and troubleshoot

  • Skillset of molecular biology techniques should include those utilized in nucleic acid diagnostic systems (i.e. next generation sequencing, PCR, RT-qPCR, gene expression, in situ hybridization) with experience in next generation sequencing assay development utilizing both Illumina and Thermo-Fisher technologies

  • Experience with various techniques pertaining to sample preparation including total nucleic acid extraction and isolation, library preparation, and data analysis for next generation sequencing applications and assay design, and experience with different automation instrumentation

  • Knowledge of CAP/CLIA/FDA regulations in a clinical reference laboratory setting pertaining to molecular oncology with an understanding of New York state test validation requirements as well as experience in developing standard operating procedures and performing cost analyses and market research

Some travel may be required for conferences and other Quest Lab site visits/meetings.
