Job Description

Schedule: 11:30 pm-8:00 am Monday-Friday

Purpose:  To describe the responsibilities of the Laboratory Manager within the Forensic Drug Testing Laboratory. 

This position reports to the Director of Laboratory Operations and is responsible for the management of Forensic Toxicology confirmation personnel. This individual may also serve in the role of a Responsible Person or alternate Responsible Person. This position works within the Employer Solutions system.  

Job Responsibilities:

1)     Plans, assigns and directs work in the laboratory. Serves as a liaison with other areas as needed.

2)     Coordinates with the Responsible Person to achieve laboratory goals and to set quality and production objectives for the Confirmation area. Laboratory goals and production objectives for the Screening and Certification Departments should also be coordinated as assigned.

3)     Mentors and supports direct reports, i.e. Supervisors, QA Specialists and Safety Coordinators in their responsibilities and functions, ensuring they receive training in supervisory skill development. Identifies and implements training programs as necessary. Monitor the quality assurance/quality control practices in Specimen Processing and other areas as assigned during night shift operations to ensure adherence to quality standards and company policies.

4)     Defines, coordinates and monitors quality assurance programs and supervises activities of the Quality Assurance Specialist. Ensures quality control and compliance procedures are followed and QC reports are up to date. Oversee plans an preparations for inspections. Monitor the overall training program of all specimen processing employees.

5)     Oversees staffing of all personnel in area of responsibility. Effectively maintains quality staffing by interviewing, hiring, training and providing staff development through performance evaluation and corrective counseling. Prepare Performance Development and Reviews for all specimen processing staff and counsel employees as appropriate.

6)     Identifies future needs in terms of staff, equipment and facilities. Submits appropriate documentation for procurement of such.

7)     Reviews test performance, drives process and project management, and prepares and submits required reports to meet established deadlines.

8)     Manages test database. Ensures departmental standard operation procedures and database accurately reflect the current process.

9)     Coordinates R&D activities as it relates to operations and actively participates on subspecialty committees, corporate committees, and business unit committees as needed.

10)  Serve as a resource person to clients, Medical Review Officers and laboratory personnel as required.

11)  Conduct staff meetings on a regular basis to identify/resolve issues and to communicate company goals and objectives.

12)  Ensure compliance with safety requirements.

13)  Other duties as assigned by the Responsible Person

Job Requirements: 

1)     Previous management or supervisory experience.

2)     6 years working experience in a forensic drug testing laboratory or equivalent.

3)     Bachelor’s degree in life sciences required. Masters degree preferred.

4)     Working knowledge of immunoassay and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry procedures

5)     Thorough knowledge of SAMHSA and CAP guidelines for forensic urine drug testing.

6)     Practical expertise and experience in process flow and management.

7)     Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
